The Andrew Martin & Kit Kemp Collaboration

GH banner blog 1

Award-winning interior designer, Kit Kemp has collaborated with Andrew Martin to create a unique, quirky and breathtaking collection of fabrics and wallpapers.

In 2008 Kit won the Andrew Martin International Designer of the Year Award, and from this win, a seed was planted for a design collaboration.

Inspired by the romance of folk tales, the Kit Kemp Collection captures the magnificent imagination of a child, and the magic of design. The six fabrics and five wallpapers within the range depict scenes of mythical lands in dusky colours, accented with contemporary bursts of bright orange, blue, yellow and green.

It began when Kit discovered tapestries from the 15th and 16th century, "it was fascinating to see these magical creatures hiding behind leaves and under hedgerows".

"Every living space should have elements to capture the imagination and enchant. We wanted a hand drawn, crafted collection bringing our love of the artisan and mythical creations together. The colours are joyful and fresh."

Native American art also provided inspiration for the Great Plains and Apache wallpapers. It was the old-wordly motifs and fabrics such as twill, linen and chintz have been modernised with vibrant colours and airer repeats. Martin & Kemp encourage designers to use the collect to layer and contract, to create a room with the unfolding twists and turns of a story.

Morris & Co by H&M

GH banner blog 1

Coming off the success of a previous collaboration with GP & J Baker, H&M are continuing their works with British interior icons. After a year in the works, the Swedish retailer are launching works with Morris & Co; the heritage print and fabric brand known across the world, William Morris.

"Nature, style and time combine in our collaboration with Morris & Co, the iconic British wallpaper & fabrics brand. Get lost in a world of exquisite original patterns and modern tributes to the work of William Morris, one of the nineteenth century's most celebrated designers."

It's this iconic nature that has allowed this collaboration to be popular amongst all ages. As some of Morris's most recognised and loved around the world, the designer was always a strong advocate of beautiful design.

The range uses some of Morris & Co's masterpieces including Love is Enough, Lily Leaf, Marigold and Pimpernel - all brought to life through wool blends, velvet and fluid fabrics, and include a range of on-trend details like tie-necks, voluminous sleeves, knife pleats and ruffles. Almost all the prints featured within H&M's collection date back to the late 1800's, with all serving an inspiration for generations of artists and designers - as evident through the collections popularity.

GH blog morris

According to Claire Valis, creative director of Morris & Co, there's never been a time where the company's patterns "have been so popular".

"There is an energy within Morris's patterns that seems to marry so well with the youthful energy of fashion," says Claire.

It took one year from conception to production, with both H&M and Morris & Co working hand in hand to develop these designs. All the while ensuring the authenticity of Morris's original creations was seamlessly represented in the clothing created.

G&H are excited to offer William Morris's wonderful collection of timeless fabrics. The Morris & Co brand brings new life to these exceptional fabrics and wallpapers, and we're eager to see the H&M arrivals when they open their doors in Adelaide in the coming weeks.

Interview with Alex Conci

GH banner blog 1

As part of a new series, we're interviewing local craftspeople, sharing their stories and quality products with our client base. We hope that many of our designers will seek unique and quality South Australian designers when making selections. We encourage all to explore these works of art and consider them in their interior or exterior settings.

This week, we got in touch with Alex Conci, an incredible artist who creates impeccable pieces for the modern, contemporary home. Using quality products, Alex's unique skillset means you're guaranteed a one-of-a-kind piece. Learn more about Alex and his company Lupo Furniture below...

How long have you been in the industry?

I have been running my current business for just over five years now, but have been working in the industry for seven. Growing up as a child, I was constantly surrounded by furniture and exposed to the manufacturing process, which aided in my experience with making all kinds of things.

What inspires you in your creation process?

Usually the material at hand inspires me the most. I find getting to work with a vast variety of materials really opens your eyes to what can be created and how to push the design limits. Most materials speak for themselves, on how they can be applied. But I find if you can figure out how to bend the rules with the use of them, you're always going to create something unique.

What part of the process excites you the most?

When a client 100% trusts me with a design and concept that is totally foreign for me. My work is mainly based around custom pieces and whilst it's very interesting, you don't always get to create exactly what you invision. When I do find the clients that are investing in my ideas it's always super exciting to deliver the item to them and see their faces.

What makes you different/unique from other furniture makers?

I think all furniture makers/designers are unique and different; the essence of creativity is that we all have our own flare. For me though, I am very fortunate to have grown up around an existing furniture retail and manufacturing business, Conci Furniture. I have two generations with a wealth of knowledge behind me, having given me great insight on how the industry works.

Can you describe your style or influence?

I don't really have a particular style, contemporary furniture with alternate materials is always great fun to play with, but I'm a massive fan of Western and Asian antiques. I find the perfect balance in a modern design piece with traditional aspects tends to lend itself to a unique piece of furniture. A piece that speaks for itself and will never go out of fashion.

Chivasso, New Ways

GH banner blog 1In 1991 the first collections of Chivasso were launched, first in the Netherlands to great success and then throughout the world. By 1995 the collection was large enough to show at the Heimtextil in Frankfurt, Germany: receiving rave reviews and appreciation. By 1999, JAB ANSTOETX Group in Germany sought a possible collaboration, and eventually, a year later became the major shareholder. The collaboration has only grown, with Chivasso now a major interior fabrics and wallpaper editor, producing some of the most beautiful collections on offer. Products have become known for their modern, contemporary essence, and versatility; suiting young fun interiors, yet also rich classical settings.

In their latest release, Chivasso have been inspired by the special aesthetics of the Japanese culture. Uniting with ease traditional and modern design influences, this range exudes a palatte of beautiful colours. Extraordinary prints, reminiscent of the much-valued colourful ink paintings of the late 18th century contrast impeccibly with minimalistic, room-high fabrics with a three-dimensional effect, inspired by the traditional art of paper folding. Throughout the collection, the textured upholstery fabric qualities have been developed in the Wabi Sabi style to convey a warm flair.

Within this collection, Ultra Blue features the colour of the sky and the seas. These decoration and upholstery fabrics captivate brilliant blue tones and create an atmosphere of freshness and wideness in every single room. The designs used allow for the colour theme to truly capture a space, and feature an array of boldly textured woven qualities.

Jade Green provides a perfect hue for the relaxed atmosphere clients are looking for. The colour of Zen, is described to support the harmony of body and soul. Supple velvets, leave a decorative impression as a result of their fine lustre. This is one of our favourite colourways, and a beautiful representation of how green can be incorporated in an easy, and beautiful way,

Wabi Sabi House explores the concept of the beauty within the imperfect. Crafted with the idea of decoration or upholstery fabrics, this theme has been reduced to the essential. Creating restrained colours and minimalistic designs, to create an atmosphere uniting naturalness and elegance harmoniously.

Interview with Mathieu Cottin

GH banner blog 1

A familiar face for some, Mathieu Cottin is a skilled craftsman, producing some of Greenfield & Hunter's favourite pieces. Using his background in upholstery, Mathieu takes inspiration from what surrounds him to create these undeniably, breathtaking pieces. We had the opportunity to chat with Mathieu and got an insight into his creative process...

When did you come to Australia? I came to Australia in July 2011 with my wife. We arrived in Cairns and moved to Adelaide a couple of weeks later.

How long have you been in the industry? I have been in the furniture industry for about nine years; working as an upholsterer in France, the UK and now Australia. But designing has always been a long term dream of mine. I started my furniture making business as soon as my permanent Australian visa allowed me to, so the beginning of 2018.

What inspires you in your creation process? I take inspiration from anything and anywhere. It could be any elements, shapes or colours, from nature or mankind. I often analyse buildings, furniture and objects, wondering why they are designed and built this way. Allowing me to hone in on the purpose of each and every element within the furniture.

What would you say are your main influences when creating a piece of work? The craft technique inspires me a lot, and the comfort and quality of living with my furniture.

What part of the process excites you the most? The whole process is an amazing experience, every step from drawing to the final conception has its own challenges. When I finish a piece, the first showing to the public is also a great moment.

What makes you different/unique from other furniture makers? I am probably too young to call myself different or unique from others. The knowledge I acquired in upholstery is an advantage. I use it daily to help me understand the form and proportion of different material - specifically when I am designing and crafting a chair or sofa. I have always had a real love for traditional craft and try to use it as much as possible in my furniture.

Can you describe your style or influence? I take a lot of inspiration and influence from mid-century Danish furniture. All my designs are a little French-inspired.

Mathieu CottinAbove is a small snippet of Mathieu's range, and it's evident the quality in the pieces he creates.

Mathieu's furniture is on display at the Jam Factory, where you can view the entire range and discover the beauty in each and every one of his creations. For more information, or to get in touch with Mathieu, contact him here

Spotlight on: M.C. Escher

GH banner blog 1

Greenfield & Hunter are excited to present M.C. Escher and his array of interesting and intriguing creations.

Mauritis Corenlis Escher (1898-1972) is one of the world's most famous graphic artists, celebrated by millions of people all over the world. During his lifetime, Escher made 448 lithographs, woodcuts and wood engravings and over 2000 drawings and sketches. Like some of his famous predecessors - Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer and Holbein - M.C. Escher was left handed. Many of his famous prints are supposedly believed to be 'impossible constructions', such as Ascending and Descending, Relativity, his Transformation Prints such as Metamorphosis I, Metamorphosis II and Metamorphosis III, Sky & Water I or Reptiles

GH blog M.C. Escher

Above: Some of Escher's most iconic images

Escher used geometry to create many of his images and incorporated mathematical forms into others. What many may not be aware of is some of his prints provide visual metaphors or abstract concepts particularly that of infinity; which he became interested in later in his career.

Besides his famed graphic designs, Escher illustrated books, designed tapestries, postage stamps and murals. His ability far surpassed what many today know of him. A clear feature of Escher's is his ability to play with architecture, perspective and impossible spaces. His art continues to amaze and wonder millions of people. The way in which Escher observed the world, and expressed his own fantasies will always intrigue us.

The National Gallery of Victoria will be presenting works by Escher within an immersive space this Summer! The exhibition titled 'Between Two Worlds | Escher X nendo' will be comprised of over 160  prints and drawings by the artist, spanning from a 1916 portrait of his father to his final work in 1969, the complex woodcut print Snakes. Visitors will gain insight into the way the artist planned and developed his works - an interesting experience no doubt.

National Gallery of Victoria, curator Catherine Leahy, "This pairing with Nendo is a way of bringing Escher's work to life, and showing that the ideas that he was thinking about still have real relevance today for design".

Escher's collection of wallpapers are available for viewing and purchase at our G&H showroom. The interesting collection is a favourite amongst the team and we'd love to see the ways in which our clients can bring these Escher wallpapers into the home environment.

Each year the awards attract outstanding works from the South Australian and Northern Territory's design community. Designers from multiple disciplines partake, allowing for a diverse range of entries and collaborations. These awards allow the community to illustrate and define the work of new and established members of designers.

Categories for these awards include:

  • Built Environment; Commerical design, retail, hospitality, residential, education and aged care - allowing those within the interior design industry to show the diverse and interesting works they've accomplished.
  • Communication; Design craft, visual communication, digital works.
  • Product; Furniture & lighting, industrial design and object - one of the popular elements of the awards that offers innovative and unique designers an opportunity to truly shine.

For each of the categories, there are student groups, which are open to those enrolled in affiliated industrial, product and furniture design, visual communication or interior design/architecture programs at the University of South Australia, Flinders University, TAFE SA and Charles Darwin University.

As we did last year, Greenfield & Hunter are thrilled to be a bronze sponsor of these awards. We're always excited to learn about new upcoming trends and designers within the industry, and it's a great way to get involved in our community.

New Collection from Morris & Co

GH banner blog 1

"Having nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful," William Morris.

William Morris (1834-1896) is regarded as one of the greatest deigners, and an outstanding figure of the Arts and Crafts Movement. He was also a poet, artist, philsopher, typographer and political theorist. Following the establishment of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co, Morris was motivated by the desire to provide affordable 'art for all' and driven by his boundless enthusiasm. Following their liquidation in 1940, the design archives and remaining wallpaper stock were purchased by another household name in home furnishings, Arthur Sanderson & Sons. Since then, they have remained a part of the Sanderson family ever since.

Inspired by the huge archives of the Morris name, the Pure Morris collection offers lighter and brighter renditions of the iconic classics, better suited for the modern home. Drawing on the craftsmanship of William Morris, this exquisite fabric and enchanting wallpaper collection is one of pure sophistication.

Our showroom now stocks the entire Pure Morris collection. With modern interpretations of Morris' classic prints, there is something for the contemporary fashion of today.

Morris & Co's new "Pure Morris collection will come as a revelation to anyone who had longed to use the designer's work in a contemporary setting," says Amy Bradford, Elle Decoration.
